COMMUNITY SERVICE
Edgar Swakamisa's Story.......
14:04 (GMT+2), Fri , 12 June 2015
Community Service  Edgar is 31 years old and became a paraplegic in 2004 after he got stabbed, thereafter he sustained serious burn injuries in 2007 where both his legs were amputated together with his left arm. He also lost the majority of function in his right arm and hand. He is bound to an electrical wheelchair and stays at Jean Webber Home since 2012 after his 90 year old granny was not able to look after him any longer.

Edgar waited from 2007 till 2010 for his electronic wheelchair from the Department of Health. These electronic wheelchairs also do not last a lifetime and therefore needs regular maintenance like wheels and batteries. The electronic wheelchair operate with two batteries at a time which only last for approximately 1 year. Edgar's chair received maintenance and batteries before, although his chair is old now and difficult to fix.

Pelonomi Hospital staff members managed to get Edgar a new electronic wheelchair from the Department of Health although the batteries were not provided. It is a privilege for ITEC to could have helped with their request to contribute with two batteries to give Edgar back his independence and confidence where he could move around independently!

If anyone would like to get involved with similar projects, please contact Ethel Botha (Social Worker) at Palenomi Hospital - 051 405 1511.

Small contributions can indeed make a big difference!!
